TSO Listening Guide

CHALLENGE
The TSO’s managing editor and musicologist yearned for a visual way to represent what was heard during a live performance in a way that could be easily understood by people who don’t read music.

SOLUTION
Haft2 developed a graphic design system indicating which instruments were featured, the keys in use, and through a Morse code-like notation, their duration.

RESULTS
The client’s inspired vision became a reality, with Haft2’s design of the Listening Guide garnering much attention and praise among musicians, music teachers, and TSO patrons.

Visualizing the thematic progression of the music involved developing a distinctive colour palette. We chose colours which represented the character of the key or theme and mood of the movement.
