Challenge

Alzheimer Society Toronto (AST) supports individuals living with dementia, along with their families and caregivers, through workshops and events hosted in its Toronto office. The existing multipurpose space—also used as an employee lunchroom—presented several barriers for clients, including poor acoustics, harsh lighting, glossy floors, confusing circulation, and unsuitable seating. AST engaged Haft2 to redesign the environment into a more accessible, dementia-friendly space that would better support programming while remaining functional for staff use.

Dementia-friendly paint colours, informed by Sherwin-Williams research, were paired with large-scale photography and inspirational messaging to create a warm, purposeful atmosphere.
Haft2 conducted staff interviews and an environmental assessment to identify key improvements within budget and timeline constraints. We reconfigured the layout using frosted-glass partitions to improve flow and spatial clarity. FLOR carpet tiles were introduced to reduce noise and glare, while softer LED lighting enhanced comfort. Dementia-friendly paint colours, informed by Sherwin-Williams research, were paired with large-scale photography and inspirational messaging to create a warm, purposeful atmosphere. Flexible furniture and integrated storage improved functionality for workshops and events.
