Take a Ride on the Reading

Absolutely anyone who's ever played the most famous board game in the world will love this new print ad campaign. Monopoly's new "Own It All" campaign aims to reawaken the world to the pleasures, and pains of investing a Sunday afternoon in playing a simple board game. Each of the four photographs depicts the interior of either a hotel (the red ones) or a house (the green ones) on one of four famed Atlantic City streets, all featured in the game. The more luxurious a property in the game, the swankier it looks. So smart. Developed by JWT Frankfurt.

"Hey, You!"

Next time you're downtown, and you feel that a billboard is talking to you, it actually might be. Jameson's Irish Whiskey has ads that move throughout city centres in search of their target market, (i.e. basketball fans, entertainment district frequenters, etc.) The ad then gets projected onto a big wall and someone begins typing real-time text messages aimed at passers-by, and then responds to reactions among the watchers, ("Ya that's right, I'm talkin' to you in the white coat!") The interactive approach potentially makes any viewer feel truly special.

The road that sings.

Here's an idea from Hokkaido, Japan. It's a stretch of pavement that's paved in such a way that it plays a tune when you drive over it. (Think of the vacuum-cleaner-like drone that you can hum to as your tires ride over the different textures on the road.) I'm thinking there's an untapped opportunity here to embed a road with an ad jingle. "Intel inside" perhaps? The Diamonds song? "Mini-mini-mini-mini wheats?" I'll stop here.

DRUGS SOLD HERE!!!

Walgreen's recently announced they'll erect the world's largest LED sign in Times Square. It'll be 341 feet tall, weigh 250,000 pounds, comprise 12 million LEDs and will clad the company's new three-level drug emporium at the 1 Times Square Building. The site's been a bright spot for ads since O.J. Gude, the "Sign King of Times Square" became the first man to use an electric bulb on a billboard in 1917. Walgreen's expects brand recognition to be raised bigtime and foresees the site as a "focal point for (the company) nationally".

Everyone has a price...

More and more outrageous advertising tactics mean more and more shameless decisions being made by those looking for an easy dollar. Golden Palace Casino came under public fire recently for paying two people to permanently tattoo the gambling house's URL on their foreheads. Video game company Acclaim crossed a line in 2002 when they paid families for the rights to advertise on the gravestones of their dead relatives. And of course, who could forget when tire manufacturer Dunlop paid four Canadians to legally change their surnames from Dunlop to Dunlop Tire for one year? The price for that stunt? A shared $25,000 USD.

Siren Song

bruna.jpg

Italian coffin maker Cofanifunebri has prided themselves on their craftsmanship since being established in 1965. Business started slipping in 2001 however when there appeared in Italy an influx of caskets from Eastern Europe. Citing these imports as sub-standard, Cofanifunebri sought to remind potential buyers of their renowned hand-carved quality. So they turned to that which sells best in Italy - sex. Since 2003 The Sexy Coffin Calendar has been the company's biggest selling product and business has never been better. The perfect gift for your mechanic or neighbourhood embalmer.

ALL NEW!!!

diamond-shreddies-pack.jpg

This ad campaign pretty well speaks for itself. According to the website, Diamond Shreddies are the result of "recent advances in cereal technology." There's a series of commercials that shows focus group participants weighing in on this innovative food marvel. All focus groups portrayed and opinions shown are genuine. Someone took a chance with this one and I imagine it will pay off.

Can'tburger

whopperfreakout013108.jpg

Burger King recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Whopper with a new campaign entitled "Whopper Freakout". The documentary style spots were conceived by Miami ad heads Crispin, Porter + Bogusky and show BK customers being told that the Whopper has been discontinued. Customers' ensuing reactions clearly reflected the fear of TV viewers, who drove Whopper sales up by double digits over the previous year's sales. Sorry We Are Open

8515_1_230.jpg
As globalization spreads more rapidly, advertisers need to find a way to market their brands in other countries. A key part of this is being able to translate a company’s slogan and values. It’s not always so easy, however, and the messages often get lost in translation.

The Monopoly Train

subizzle.jpg
There is serious debate whether an entire R Train in New York City (750 feet of steel) was a display of true graffiti or whether it was an advertising ploy.
