A truck named "Sugar"...

Every day in New York City, a kitchen in a truck by the name of Sugar makes the rounds, selling freshly baked cookies, brownies and the sweet like to passersby. The Treats Truck was the brainchild of Kim Ima and borne of her dual love of baking and New York City. Ima offers a rotating selection of both innovati and classics including Oatmeal Jammies, Peanut Butter Sandwich cookies and rice crispy squares. Ima and her team don't purport to make anything fancy, merely some of the best baked sweets you could grab on a weekday Manhattan afternoon. The website offers a daily schedule of when and where in the city "Sugar" might be found. Available for special orders.

...and one named "For Real?".

As environmentally aware as we're becoming, the auto industry is still making things that look like this. And people are buying them. AutoData reports that in 2007, SUV sales in the United States increased 22.7% from the previous year. China's SUV stats for the same year actually increased by 49.1%. Early stats from this year seem to indicate high gas prices will prove to be a viable damper on SUV sales, in favour of their compact counterparts.

Not Your Father's Hibachi

Well it's a far cry from the fire pit over which you roasted marshmallows as a kid. The outdoor kitchen trend was borne of the behemoth barbecues of the 90s and is mushrooming into a common feature of the 21st Century home. What started as an additional burner or two on your Weber has turned into an entire outdoor room complete with rotisserie system, dishwasher, fire-pit table, stainless steel condiment cabinet, plate-warming drawer, ice machine -- you get the point. Dining al fresco will never be the same.

Certification - The Next Round

There's a new certification program for manufacturers that's recently been introduced by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The SmartWay program is a partnership established between the EPA and the freight industry. Its environmental goals include lowering carbon dioxide emissions by 33 million tonnes annually by 2012. In order for a company's wares to receive the badge, the company must certify its transport carrier network is using only SmartWay compliant carriers. The first company to have received this prestigious new certification was HP. Whirlpool was soon to follow. Watch for other initiatives of this sort to pop up in the years to come. (And while you're at it, check out that good looking logo.)

Please Fix Me

Researchers (Note: That's quite an ambiguous term, isn't it -- a little like the ubiquitous "they".) are developing a sort of nervous system to be built into bridges, airplanes, buildings and ships. This "Structural Health Monitoring System" uses ultrasound waves that travel through minuscule fibers that are embedded into the structure's materials. The idea is that the individual components themselves will be able to detect defaults such as cracks or rust. The information would then be conveyed to a central computer system, informing engineers and repair teams of the need for attention. Now that's brainy.

Extra Extra!

Read all about it. Well, at least read the headline. CNN and Boston's Barbarian Group have teamed up on a venture to bring a selection of CNN.com's headlines to t-shirts near you. The idea is to immortalize newsworthy moments that would otherwise be quite fleeting, along with the rest of what's virtually current. Look for this icon beside featured headlines under the "Latest News" heading to see which shirts are available for mail-order. As I write this, the most intriguing t-shirt available reads "Colossal squid has soccer-ball eyes". Oh yes, we'll be watching this one for some time. Shirt selection differs from day to day.

The Milkier Way

New research shows there's a good chance our galaxy could lose its celestial stability in 40 million years, throwing planets off course and crashing into one another. On the upside, no plastic bags are expected to exist afterward.
