LifeStraw

One sixth of the world's population is without access to safe drinking water and each day, 6,000 children in the world die from water-borne disease. This century's first serious weapon against those staggering stats is called LifeStraw - a personal filtration device that involves no electricity and no moving parts. It works like a normal drinking straw, but kills 99.999% of all bacteria and will provide its user with 700 litres of fresh drinking water throughout its lifetime. And at $2 each, this is something we're going to see a lot more of. We hope.

And pie for dessert.

For those looking to throw a dinner party with a little extra thrill (and vertigo), a Belgian company is offering "Dinner in the Sky". Waiters, bartenders, musicians and salt cruets alike will accompany you and your guests on a giant platform that will be raised and suspended 50 metres in the sky by an industrial crane. An 8 hour event starts at about 8,000 Euros.

Siren Song

Italian coffin maker Cofanifunebri has prided themselves on their craftsmanship since being established in 1965. Business started slipping in 2001 however when there appeared in Italy an influx of caskets from Eastern Europe. Citing these imports as sub-standard, Cofanifunebri sought to remind potential buyers of their renowned hand-carved quality. So they turned to that which sells best in Italy - sex. Since 2003 The Sexy Coffin Calendar has been the company's biggest selling product and business has never been better. The perfect gift for your mechanic or neighbourhood embalmer.

Time's Ticking

Here's a cool clock that keeps a running track of some startling global statistics. In the one minute period that I had the page open, it claims 70 cars and 171 computers were manufactured. 110 people died while 252 people were born. The greatest impact from the site comes not from the numbers themselves, but the rate at which they climb.
