Happy New Year

Champagne.jpg

This New Year’s Eve, thanks to the time-honoured tradition of uncorking champagne at midnight, it’s estimated that Americans will release 8 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. While this may seem heavy at first, bear in mind that it only takes 7 minutes for all 13,000 New York City cabs to do the same. Given the environmentally conscious choice, I’ll take the bubbly and walk.

Three Little Pigs Redux

A retired boxing coach in Lithuania has no reason to fear wolves. Vitautas Janiskevicius has spent ten years using over 20,000 glass bottles to build a house for his wife and himself. The couple are now looking at an extension to their new abode, provided they can secure the materials. What a great reason for a party. Bring your own building materials and reduce, reuse, recycle.

It may look white, but it's all green...

openhouse.jpg

If you’re extra lucky this holiday season, you just may be invited to a yuletide party at Openhouse in New York’s SoHo nabe. This plain but beautiful white room is billed as a socially aware event space for any artist, event, product, brand or concept that promotes environmental sustainability. They even put their money where their mouth is – 5% of the proceeds generated by a booking is allocated to the socially responsible organization of the booker’s choice. That would truly be an event you could feel good about.

Life Imitating Art, Cozily

This just may be the perfect gift. Introducing the Genuine Linus Blanket from Peanuts – a real-life version of a childhood icon. This super-soft baby blue fleecy throw is trimmed in satin and embossed in one corner with a Schulz-drawn image of everyone’s favourite introvert. What makes this buy such a gift however is that partial proceeds from sales go directly to Project Linus, an organization that makes (and accepts donations of) blankets and afghans for children who need them the most. Thus from your purchase, you or a loved one will be warm, and so will a child, and duly so will your heart.

Cuppa Perfection

The next time you send someone to doctor your coffee or tea for you, it might be a good idea for them to use this clever little cup. Coloured bands on the inside of it will inform your kind friend how you like your hot beverage best by colour matching the liquid and how much milk or cream you prefer. Colour shades include Milky, Classic British and Dark and Strong, among others. Now there'll be no excuse for anything but the perfect brew.

Truly, The Perfect Gift

What gift could possibly be greater than the gift of health for the world's children? HealthyKids International presents their Holiday Gift Catalogue for those of us fortunate enough to be able to give a little more freely than most. Each of the gift levels describes clearly the immense benefits children in less developed countries will receive as a result of your generosity. For instance, a gift of $100,000 will support the overseas journey of a team of doctors and nurses from Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children where they will offer advanced training to bolster the work of local physicians. In addition, the loved one of your choice will receive an original (and very beautiful) painting by renowned artist Catherine Massaro. Other gift levels are described, along with their corresponding and astounding works of art.
